Shotokan Karate Training in Kissimmee & Orlando
Shotokan Karate is a prominent Japanese tradition of Karate-Do. Karate-Do is the Japanese term that translates to "the way of the empty hand". While Shotokan is widely recognized as an effective form of self-defense, its founder, Gichin Funakoshi, also emphasized the physical and mental benefits it provides — improved muscular and cardiovascular development, self-control, respect, discipline, increased flexibility, and reduced stress, to name a few.
Shotokan training is typically divided into three parts: Kihon (basics), Kata (forms or patterns of movements), and Kumite (sparring). Techniques in kihon and kata often feature deep, long stances that build stability, generate powerful movements, and strengthen the legs.
Shotokan is often regarded as a "hard" and "external" martial art because beginners and color belts train with strong, precise techniques to develop solid fundamentals. At Rising Sun Martial Arts, students learn traditional Shotokan Karate-Do along with practical, real-world self-defense. Training focuses on Kihon (basic techniques), Kata (forms), and Kumite (progressive levels of sparring and self-defense). We offer classes for kids and adults of all ages.

Jr Class
Our kids’ Karate classes are designed for ages 6 to 12. The focus is on developing essential life skills such as listening, following directions, respect, discipline, self-control, and making positive choices. Students also build motor skills, balance, coordination, and overall physical development, along with learning personal safety and basic stranger awareness.
Children begin training in the core elements of Shotokan Karate — Kihon (basics), Kata (forms), and Kumite (sparring). They are also introduced to "playground-safe" self-defense techniques appropriate for their age. Color stripe belts are awarded based on skill level and performance during kyu rank testing. Parents and teachers often praise the courtesy, confidence, and self-control our young students demonstrate — a true reflection of their dedication and the success of our program.
Sr Class
The Senior Karate Class is for students ages 13 and older. This program is more individualized, allowing each student to learn, grow, and advance at their own pace. Training focuses on building self-defense skills, confidence, discipline, and physical conditioning.
Participants benefit from improved fitness, weight control, flexibility, stress reduction, and increased muscle tone. In addition to Kihon, Kata, and Kumite, this class places strong emphasis on practical, real-world self-defense. The structure and training intensity help teens and adults strengthen both body and mind while progressing through the ranks with purpose and clarity.
