Shotokan Karate is prominent Japanese Tradition of Karate-Do. Karate-Do is the Japanese term which basically translates as “Empty hand way”. While it is generally recognized as an effective form of self-defense, the founder of Shotokan karate- Gichin Funakoshi also recognized the physical and mental benefit karate provided as well: improved muscular and cardio development, self-control, respect, discipline, increased flexibility, and reduced stress to name just a few. Shotokan training is usually divided into three parts: Kihon (basics), kata (forms or patterns of moves), and Kumite (sparring). Techniques in kihon and kata are characterized by deep, long stances that provide stability, enable powerful movements, and strengthen the legs. Shotokan is often regarded as “hard” and “external” martial art because it is taught that way to beginners and color belts to develop strong basic techniques and stances. At Rising, Sun Martial Arts students learn traditional Shotokan karate-do along with real-world self-defense. Training consists primarily of Kihon (basic techniques practice), Kata (forms practice), and Kumite (progressive levels of sparring and self-defense). We offer classes for kids and adults of all ages:
Our kids Karate classes are for ages 6 thru 12 years old. The emphasis here is on learning and developing skills such as listening, following directions, respect, discipline, self-control, and learning to make the right choices. Motor skills, balance, and muscular development are also a major focus as well as personal safety and stranger awareness. Students begin learning the basic skills and techniques of Shotokan karate (kihon, kata, kumite) as well as basic “play ground safe” self-defense techniques. Color stripe belts are awarded according to skill level and upon passing kyu rank testing. Many parents and teachers have complimented on the courtesy and self control our students demonstrate - a testament to both the students and the success of our program.
The senior Karate class is for students 13 years and older. The Sr Class is more individualized and students learn and advance at their own level and pace. Self defense, self confidence, and self discipline are developed at a higher level. We can help you get in shape, lose weight, increase flexibility, reduce stress, and build muscle. In addition to basic Kihon, Kata, and Kumite, a strong emphasis is placed on real self-defense.
